Susana Mingram

Artist member since 2021
Ajax, Ontario

Susana Mingram is an acrylic and Photoshop artist who was raised in Mexico City and resides in Ajax, ON. She explores the idea of authenticity being more powerful than originality by digging deeper into her passion for horses, childhood memories and experiences as an immigrant. She's currently a third year student at OCAD University for Drawing and Painting, and has been featured in the, "Let's Go Digital, Let's Get Active!" art exhibition by Express Impress in 2020 and is a member of Tool & Eye's collective. She aspires to be a full-time artist after she finishes her degree, but until then, she will seek adventure to continue growing both as a person and an artist.

Insightful, upbeat and self-confident

When did you start making art, and why?

I started to make art since I was seven years old, but professionally? Since 2016. I make art because it feels like a journey of self-discovery. Every art piece I make marks a period in time where I am someone, in a place, enjoying the moment.

What places do you hang out in Toronto?

Since I live 45min away from Toronto, the amount of hours I can stay in Toronto are kind of limited. So, I like to stay around the OCAD U campus and go into the AGO, but also go to Dundas Square to observe the people and splurge some money at the Eaton Centre. I also enjoy going to clubs twice a month with some friends to dance and enjoy the night while we can.

Favourite medium

Acrylics and Photoshop. I can't choose only one. With acrylics, I feel more connected with the piece, but more limited with what I can do. With Photoshop in the other hand, I feel more liberated and free to experiment more, but sometimes it doesn't feel as personal and since I can use Photoshop with my PC, it builds an urge inside of me to go outside. However, mixing both is a great way to find balance in my artistic practice and embrace technology as a tool.

What artists do you admire right now?

Nathan Sandwell (a fellow OCADU friend), Flesh.png, (one hell of a good illustrator), Chloe Mosbacher (oils and acrylics painter) and Romy Elliott (horse painter)
